September Overview
The end of summer? Probably not! As the years have progressed I, as others, have noticed the trend of late summers. There are still many plants in flower. Indeed most plants, particularly those of a long flowering period, have a later flowering time extending into autumn or early winter. Autumn is a good time for preparation for next year in the way of planting early flowering bulbs, trees, large deciduous shrubs, hedges and evergreen shrubs like topiary. It is also the best time for repairing or replacing lawns.
September Interest
Coming into interest this month will be cylamen, japanese anemones and autumn crocuses (crocus speciosus) and colchicums. September is also a great month for many grasses which will be in flower, the many types of Salvia and the aster (daisy) family which includes Rudbeckia, Helianthus (sunflowers) Helenium, Echinacea, and Asters of which some have been renamed Symphyotrichum and Eurybia

September maintenance
This is a really good time of year to repair the lawn as it can heal with less weed competition. Feeding, weeding, moss killing, seeding or turfing can all be done over the next two months.

Wisterias will probably want a reduction of long green wippy growth that will weigh it down with rain particularly if it is wrapped around other plants.

Dead heading can still be continued on roses and herbaceous plants like salvias, kniphofia, tulbaghia, penstemons etc.

Treat for vine weevil to reduce damage by grubs
