Landscaping

We carry out a number of different landscaping services including paving, decking, pathways, fences, screening and pond construction.  We build full gardens from beneath the ground upwards and additions or rectifications and improvements to existing gardens Damian has personally carried out work that has lasted 15 - 20yrs because of good building practises.  This is an area which requires constant upgrading of knowledge as new building materials and construction methods are introduced regularly.  The skill then become knowing what the right questions to ask are.

Landscaping with consideration to plant life is often overlooked by many landscapers as they just don't understand plants.  Often inadequate previsions are made for planting including not allowing enough planting space, excess concrete, poor drainage and not allowing for future services like electrics and irrigation.  Another common problem is inadequate pointing by builders in particular who often make it too weak when they apply building principles incorrectly to landscaping.  Every building material requires consideration.  A builder or landscaper will build what they think you want.  They are not concerned with gardens and plant practicalities and aesthetics.  We will drill into the detail to make what you want and what you don't know you need.  As a result of being left with problems created by other landscapers and builders we have taken it on ourselves to make a better service.

Decking is sometimes constructed with poor supports meaning that it bows after some time meaning it may then warp.  The wrong use of decking screws can make it difficult to maintain as some of these rot over time or the heads burr making them impossible to remove for maintainance. But surprisingly one of the biggest mistakes we see is allowing wood to sit in water or touch soil which inevitably leads to joists rotting which undermines the whole structure.  This is easily overcome yet shortcuts are regularly made.  There are several alternatives to this including the use of ground screws and damp proof course material.

Pond construction is a specialist subject requiring not only the understanding of water and plumbing but also biological systems.  If not constructed correctly  a pond can empty itself or become a toxic environment for fish and pond life.  Many design ideas don't have practical applications and may look good in the short term but fail to function over the long term.  As we understand many of these principles through years of practical experience we can make a pond that looks good, functions and is practical to maintain.

Garden features can enhance a garden and we love creating this kind of thing.  From water features to turning a wall into a wooden planter with seating to rockeries to any kind of focal point. With a bit of imagination there is no limit.  A good garden feature will be well placed in 3d space allowing optimum viewing angles, use and maintenance.  We can advise and create bespoke features that bring your garden to life and make it that much more interesting.

Irrigation can be an absolute nightmare and waste of money as systems get more and more complicated.  All irrigation has the potential to wrong as it is laid bare to the elements. Rats, foxes and garden forks all have the potential to go through it.  Computers go wrong, spray lines miss things and the garden often has different requirements in some areas to others.  We have found a few systems that work effectively without braking the bank, that are easy to maintain and are adaptable.  It helps if you know what the specific range of requirements plants can handle are then you know what the tolerances are.  The more expensive the plants are the more important adequate irrigation will be.

Electrics and lighting require specialists as it is illegal and dangerous for untrained persons to handle electrical circuits.  Although we do not directly handle these systems we can help with layout and practicalities.  For example we can provide and layout a lighting system, or pump and filter system for ponds ready for an electrician to connect to an electrical mains supply.   The last thing you want is miles of unsightly electrical cable  hanging over plants and tripping people up. We may also add black hose pipe over mains leads to protect them from being bitten by animals such as foxes.  Electricians aren't so interested in gardens so we have to tell them what is required from a professional garden design point of view.
